Activity Goals

Learners practice the basics of speaking data and playing with data by discussing sleep. They’ll gather data in the classroom about sleep, translate the data into visuals, and practice using language about describing and questioning data.

Key Objectives

SD.1 Ask questions

SD.3 Describe data and data visuals

SD.6 Explain and interpret data and data visuals

SD.7 Use comparative language

SD.9 Use language for asking questions

PD.2 Practice skills of data collection

PD.3 Gather information

Steps

  1. Learners begin by reading the story “A Good Night’s Sleep” and filling out a work sheet with questions about the story. Find “A Good Night’s Sleep” here.

  2. Learners then discuss issues related to sleep–how much sleep is enough sleep? What things can worsen our sleep? Learners come up with 3-6 questions to ask to collect data (such as quality of sleep, hours of sleep, number of nightmares, etc.).

  3. Learners will collect data in the classroom, and then put the data into different data visuals (graphs, charts, etc.).

  4. Learners look at the data and practice using words to describe the data and data visuals (evidence, graphic, visual, outlier, data point, dataset, trend, categories, represent, visualize, categorize, etc.).

  5. Learners will practice presenting a single data visual, summarizing its main points, to the rest of the class.

  6. Learners will then ask questions and discuss how to improve sleep.
